Colin & Justin try to convince their co-owners to sacrifice a bedroom as they strive to put their ‘quality over quantity’ logic into practice.  For them, knocking two smaller bedrooms into one large ‘A’ framed suite makes SO much sense.  But!  Will Cherri & David love their new larger room… or will they pine for the days when they owned a four, rather than a three bedroomed cottage?

The wall running down the left of this image created two rooms – the small quilted space shown in the previous picture and this double bedroom.  Having the bed squashed against the French doors and floral wallpaper wrapped around the entire crime scene was such bad news.  As such, we were glad to start demolishing…

With the wall gone, the bedroom’s scale starts to develop.  The door now lies in the centre of the space and the true shape of the ‘A’ frame can be appreciated.

New insulation is added to keep out the chills and the overhead orange pine timber boards are painted with Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter.

Leaving the ‘A’ frame timber beams natural and painting the walls in plain neutral tones celebrates the room’s space and architectural quotient.  The floors have been sanded and stained, the baseboards and doors painted using Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain and new Dimplex wall heaters have been added.

A large headboard, custom manufactured by N’Shape Design, acts as a small ‘wall’ so that the bed can be positioned.  This done, our ’50 shades of linen’ nest can evolve.  Completed, the bedroom feels more like a hotel suite and is infinitely more rewarding than before.

Taking a balanced, symmetrical approach works really well.   New furnishings from Urban Barn have a lovely weathered look that whisper past times, but in a modern way.

Inspired by relaxing suites in tranquil spa hotels, we added a couple of modern chaise longues from Ikea to create a dedicated relaxation zone.
